It's that time again!
Thanks to Goodreads for doing all the tracking for me. This year my goal was 40 books and I am happy to report I busted it with 47 reads! Yeah! I even managed toreview a few here on the blog. So let's look at the stats:
You know I am interested in so many topics that my reading list is usually very eclectic, but I went for more escapism this year. I blame the stress of the past few years, lol
I did manage to work a bit more on my language skills and read a few books for work. I'm continuing to read several series including 'The Dresden Files' (each book is better than the last, with exception of Ghost Story) and of course favorites authors like Anne Rice, Chelsea Quinn Yarbaro and Neil Gaiman are also on the list.
Do you have any good recommendations?
I'm planning on reading 50 books next year, so I'd love to hear your about your most loved books. See you soon! PS: This post contains affiliate links. If you purchase from these links the price isn't affected, but I do receive a very small commission. I only recommend things I use, love and find worth noting. These commissions help to offset the cost of this blog. I'm not sure how it's even possible, but this blog is 10 years old today. WTF?? How is that even possible?? It seems like only last year I took the plunge and leaped out there and bought this domain. Looking back, I've blogged about my adventures traveling in the USA, Europe, Iceland, Canada, Mexico and South America. I've written about trips planned, delayed and failed, as well as amazing adventures that were life changing. I've shared my cruises to the Caribbean, Europe and the Transatlantic journeys. I documented my switch from Vegetarian to Vegan, shared recipes, created book reviews and wrote about my day to day life. I've moved from Texas to the south of France, London, the Lake District and back to the USA and you have been with me. This blog has opened so many doors for me. I have written several best selling books that wouldn't have happened if I wasn't pushing myself to write here. It's also helped me to try new things, and be open to new experiences. I've gotten serious about Youtube and started sharing way more of everyday life. My world has grown as I've meet new people from all walks of life and become much more of a global citizen. Thank you so much for reading my posts, sharing your own stories and connecting with me. Your feedback, suggestions and insights have helped me so much. Your friendships mean the world to me and I treasure you. In the next part of this 10 year celebration I'm going to share some stats with you and take a trip down memory lane. (Reading the old posts used to make me cringe now I am just nostalgic!)
I can't wait to see what the next 10 years bring!
Hello!
I hope you are well and enjoying December. I have a really quick book review today. Recently I read A Dead Djinn in Cairo: (Dead Djinn Universe) the Kindle Edition and think that you will like it to. Its a very quick read at only 47 pages but very well written. It is part of a larger series set in 1912 Egypt in a steampunk world filled with magic, mystery and mayhem. See a clockworks is about to destroy the earth...
I think it's a prefect read on a cold afternoon, plus right now Amazon has the Kindle version on for only $1.99 so grab a cup of tea, get comfy and dive in!
MY QUICK REVIEW: Overall very good short story that drives you to read more, even if steampunk isn't your thing. Very good world building and a well balanced magical story with interesting characters, fun steampunk devices and just enough of the old Egyptian mysteries thrown to make for a very good tale.
The first book in the Dead Djinn Universe, I stumbled on A Master of Djinn and began reading over the Thanksgiving break, but saw this short (47 page) story as a prelude and decided to move to it. It is set in the Steampunk Universe of 1912, filled with magic and mystery. If you are looking for a short, entertaining read begin with this one and then you will be glad there are more books in the series. THE AUTHOR: Phenderson Djéli Clark is a prolific award-winning author. He was also nominated for the Hugo, Nebula, and Sturgeon for his novellas Ring Shout, The Black God’s Drums and The Haunting of Tram Car 015. Which I am adding to my TBR list. Msoneworld4me on Youtube Happy Weekend! How is July almost over?? This summer is flying by and on that subject, I popped into a shop today and was shocked to see the Halloween candy out! OMG! (Insert pumpkin here, lol) As crazy as that was I did manage to only buy one Halloween themed thing.... But before we go there...lets talk about summer reads. I stumbled upon this book: This book is a political action thriller, written by Jack Carr. It's not my typical read, but I think stepping out of your comfort zone and reading other genres is necessary. (After all we can only read so many vampire novels before growing bored, lol!) This is book four in this series and Amazon is developing it into a series starring Chris Pratt. So I did come in late to this party, but.... The Devil's Hand: A Thriller (Terminal List Book 4)
Set in modern day, with tech (I liked) politics (I didn't) this isn't my favorite genre. I do read some spy novels but this feels way too political for my taste. Covid, wine snobs, the author's extremely thinly-veiled political points and other themes I don't want in a book I read for pure escapism. I think for some people this will be a MUST read for the summer, but not for me.
Stay tuned for more reviews! Hello! Hope your summer is going well and you are not melting! It's been really hot here. One of those summers where New Mexico is on fire (seriously) and it's even hotter in south Texas. I stayed at a hotel last week and was chatting with other hotel guests about the heat and one actually said, "Welcome to HELL!" Err, okay. Thanks for that. I drove to the Gulf Coast for a week and it was actually COOLER there than LONDON. WTF? How is that even possible? But enough going on about the weather, I am pleased to share a new book review with you. This week I read The Sentinel a Jack Reacher, novel by Lee Child and Andrew Child. Read on for my quick review. This is book number 25 in the Jack Reacher series. At the time of this writing there are currently 27 novels published and a feature movie (2012) as well as an Amazon series (2022 -?) The Sentinel: A Jack Reacher Novel by Lee Child and Andrew Child
My Last Minute Thoughts:
The Magic Mountain - Der Zauberberg by Thomas Mann
The Magic Mountain is a novel by Thomas Mann, first published in November 1924. It is widely considered to be one of the most influential works of the 20th-century in German literature. The story opens in the decade before World War I. It introduces Hans Castorp, the only child of a Hamburg merchant family. He is in his early 20's, about to take up a shipbuilding career in Hamburg. He visits his cousin Joachim Ziemssen, who is in a luxury sanatorium in the Swiss Alps, and we are introduced to a memorable cast of characters as the story unfolds. My Last Minute Thoughts:
More reviews out soon~ Leviathan Falls: Expanse, Book 9
The last book in the Expanse series. If you are a fan of the television show or the series you must read it. It was an emotional, but not surprising end. (Insert sad face here.) I'm not ready to let the characters go just yet. My Last Minute Thoughts:
Think Again: Power of Knowing What You Don't Know
by Adam Grant This was a recommended book from a friend and I'm devouring it. It has enough stories to offset statistics and is anything but another dry psychologist theory self-help book. Direct quote, "Intelligence is traditionally viewed as the ability to think and learn. Yet in a turbulent world, there's another set of cognitive skills that might matter more: the ability to rethink and unlearn." I'm finding it very entertaining as well as informative. You can learn more about the book here:
What I'm Watching: Debris
Looking for something new to watch? Debris is a new American science fiction television series. It is on NBC and premiered on March 1, 2021. The premise of the series is that debris from an alien spacecraft begins to fall to earth and causes all sorts of odd occurrences and problems. Then add in world governments trying to weaponize the debris and people coming into contact with it on accident and having supernatural experiences and you get a nice mix of chaos, horror, and government intrigue.
What I'm Cooking:
Smoothies! It's finally warming up enough for smoothies! I know it's not a revolutionary recipe but I have perfected the blueberry, banana, coconut, and almond slivers procedure! Okay, so mainly I just dump everything in the blender and call it breakfast.. but when simple works you stick with it!
Have a great weekend!
This post contains links to buy the book on Amazon, I receive a few pennies if you purchase (the price doesn't change for you) and it helps to offset the cost of the website. |
