What word or spelling should I use? More #Joys of being #International and #TravelThis is a problem that I face constantly in my business and with my blogging. I find that no matter which I go with, I tend to get ‘corrected’ by people. I admit my spelling in general is not the BEST but when you add in so many languages with so many slang terms, idioms and expressions it can be overwhelming! My British friends and I have spent entire evenings translating words back and forth. Some conversations are better than others and we exchange words even. American English vs British English vs Canadian English vs Australian English! Makes for some lively nights at the pub! What is your native tongue and how often do you slip into it? Does it make you feel unique or uncomfortable? I usually start all my meetings (both professional and private) with, “Can you understand me?” But that aside, spelling is even more complex an issue. If I use the Australian spelling I find US readers tell me that I’m wrong, but if I use the US spelling I get emails from by Aussies buds, the Brits and readers from other countries. #Fail For example check out: Colour In Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the UK its spelt ‘colour’. In the US it’s color and in Canada it’s both. Canada rules! Or how about words that end with ‘ise’ or ‘ize’. Recognise or Recognize? Analyse or Analyze? My favorites? Aluminum or Aluminium Gray or Grey, Catalogue or Catalog, Center or Centre, Defence or Defense? The list goes on…. What spelling do you use?
I’d be interested to hear how different bloggers approach this. Do you think it makes the blog more difficult to read or more genuine? I tend towards the later. I like to learn new expressions and terms and then throw them in the mix. I don’t often type in French, Spanish, Italian or Japanese, but I do use words from these languages in my every day speaking. #Truth Languages are so fascinating and complex! So if you see a misspelled word in my writing, please overlook it. I’m sure it's spelled right in SOME dialect or another. See you at the airport- Comments are closed.
